HELP!
I just hooked up a Mitsumi 1.44MB drive to my ST. Now, if haven't fixed the
controller yet to format 1.44MB's, but that isn't the problem.
It seems that my ST thinks both Drive A and B exist even though I only have one
drive! What ever do I do to fix this? Also, I've gotten bombs when trying to
delete stuff on a write protected disk. I think something is afoot!
The drive works otherwise. Please help me.
Dom
P.S. Has anybody seen or heard of a program that'll let you selectively turn on
or off Drive B? i.e. you forgot to turn on Drive B and powerup, so you need to
let the ST know it exists, or you are having problems with Drive B so you want
the ST to think it isn't there.

Keep us posted Howard, I at least, am very interested (he said,
thinking of putting his 1.62 STe in a tower case). Oh yeah, don't you

Wow! That's $125 each. Pretty good. But what do you want three or four
graphics cards for? Wouldn't that use up all the expansion slots?

All ST software which uses the OS graphics routines will be speeded up by
the blitter. Many programs which *don't* use the OS have blitter support
as well, since ST blitters have been around since 1987.

I don't know about the US, but in the UK the STe is cheaper than the A500.

Alright, what's the secret? This is really neat! Unfortunately it's not the
most readable on my SC1224. I tried my fractint code and uniterm on it, I was
pleasantly surprised to see that both work. However, I think you might want to
consider giving the full 640x400 screen to TOS programs, and use the 16 line
font by default. (Just like mono mode, eh?) Mebbe things like Gulam will work
with the expanded screen size. (Tho, come to think of it, I doubt it. So few
programs are written to be resolution independent, sigh.) At a guess, I'd say
this thing must tweak the video base address during horizontal blank intervals,
to skip one scan line. But how do you delay the vertical sync by one-half a
scan line to draw the alternate field?
Hm... Looking on a TV, I still see black lines between pixel rows. I guess
there isn't a sync delay in there, is there. Oh well. Looks kind of like one
of those freeware mono emulators for color screens.
Well, I still think it's neat. I'm gonna mail a check right away for this
one. Thanks.
Geeze. Can't wait to try it in monchrome. Uniterm with a 100 row screen.
I love it!

Subject: DOUBLE Version 2.01 (takes 32K less RAM !!)
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
Double Screen-Heigh emulator for STE, MEGA STE (and TT ??) VERSION 2
"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" """""""""
WHY A NEW VERSION ? Well, the old version allocated 64000 bytes for
the new screen in low memory. But the old screen still took up the
32000 bytes in high memory and that was a big waste (especially for
those with 520 and 1040 machines). Instead of allocating 64000 new
bytes for the new screen version 2 expands the old screen by 32000
bytes (moving the top of memory down) and then saves 32000 bytes !!!
Version 2 takes up totally 32522 bytes including the resident code
and should be the smallest big-screen emulator available for the STE.
Why does this program only work om STE and not on standard ST ????
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
Both the display modes uses new hardware registers on the STE to
make the code small. The interlace emulation could not be made
on the ST without moving the whole screen all the time and taking up
all the CPU-time. On the STE it takes a few instructions each VBL.
Read this before you install DOUBLE2.PRG in your AUTO-folder
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
To install DOUBLE2.PRG just put it in your auto-folder as early as
possible (and be sure it's before Quick-ST etc). If you have any
programs that allocates reset-resident memory by moving the screen
(like Harlekins RESETMEM) you MUST put DOUBLE2.PRG after those !!!
If you use Harlekin you MUST use RESETMEM.PRG first in AUTO-folder.
When the computer boots DOUBLE2.PRG will NOT install itself unless
you are holding down one of the SHIFT keys. If installed in mono it
will emulate a 640 x 800 screen (double height) and if installed in
color (desktop.inf must be medium res) a 640 x 400 screen.
RIGHT-SHIFT while booting --> Up/Down scrolling emulator
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
When you move the mouse close to the top or bottom of the visible
screen area the screen will scroll down or up to display more of the
screen. Think of your monitor screen as a window showing a part of
the whole area. In this mode text-based program (TOS etc) will still
use only the upper half of the screen (the normal area) as this worked
best with the programs I tested. Most GEM based programs will use the
whole screen (I made it for use with Calamus DTP and Timeworks DTP).
LEFT-SHIFT while booting --> Interlaced screen display
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
This will double the number of lines WITHOUT having to scroll the
screen by condensing the screen display. This mode will flicker some
(users of color monitors or TV should use 60 Hz) but you might get a
better result by adjusting the contrast (yes, it looks like an Amiga).
In this mode both TOS and GEM-programs will use the whole screen area.

I have seen (in the UK) the Electrohome ECM11311 multisync monitor for sale
at a price of 149UKP.
Can anyone tell me anything about this monitor, and especially if it will

I'm also thinking of getting an NEC 3D but this Electrohome monitor offer is
*much* cheaper, so I'd like to go for it if someone can tell me it will
work.
Thanks,

Solution: Just stop using a vi clone and use a real editor like Emacs.

Subject: High Rez Cards?
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
This is my first time up on this system, so I hope this gets through fine
(without multiple copies etc., such as I often see). I am a proud general
partner in the company High Resolution Desktop Publishing, in Columbus Ohio.
I run the company (I'm the creative end, and my partner is the business end)
off a Mega4 with ADSPEED (which is great), the GCR (which is also great), and
Calamus/outline art. The Mad Axeman Press is another Atari based (using
Pagestream) Desktop publishing company here is Columbus! So, the Atari is
actually being used for professional applications! (kinda nice huh?)
My main question is: What type of color cards can I get for the ST. I know
very little about this area despite doing lots of research. Even RIO DATEL
does not know any of the Tech. specs for the cards that they will supposedly
have by the end of the summer. I am looking for a (voice) phone # that I
could call, and an address I could write to in order to get some info on
these devices. I don't mind ordering through CANADA if I have to, or even
further if I know the product will be compatible with U.S. scan rates. I have
an 800*600 multisynch (get the swithc from IB Computers, it is nicer by far
than the one from TALON), and I would like a Calamus compatible color card
for the full 16million colors (256 on screen is acceptable of course, but
more would be nice). I would prefer one that would work with my monitor, but
would consider switching if necessary. ANY INFO AT ALL WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
My second question is: Overscan, I have it installed, but the
incompatibilities are numerous. I have heard of a product called AUTOSWITCH
OVERSCAN, which I would like to get. Seeing as networking is not my boat, I
would like an address or tele# to call to get this product.
And third: Get a life you guys who argue continously about which computer is
best, hell, I like all of them, they are all great for different things, and
all the main systems (amiga, atari, mac, ibm) are pretty much competent all
around systems. If the human race can't even stop bickering over which
computer to use (yea, you are arguing over a hunk of silicone and a few
wires), how the hell can we agree on anything that actually matters at all!

J, version 3.2,

at Waterloo
Version 3.2 of J, is now available on the file server
watserv1.UWaterloo.CA [ 129.97.129.140 ]
watserv1.Waterloo.edu [ 129.97.129.140 ]
at the University of Waterloo. In the directory "languages/apl/j",
anonymous ftp users may find J for these systems:
3b1
mips
next
pc
sgi (irix)
st (atari_st)
sun3
sun4 (sparc)
vax (vax_bsd, ultrix)
Earlier releases of J are available for certain other systems:
sun386i
mac
An index showing all APL files is available as "languages/apl/index".
Other dialects of APL, such as Sharp APL, I-APL, and "ratapl" are available.
Three APL fonts may be obtained.
(1) APL2745, a postscript line font
(2) An X-Windows font
(3) A TeX font.
Currently, this service is being provided on an experimental basis, and
there are no promises that it will continue on a long term basis, nor
is there any warantee of serviceability or completeness of the software
distributed from watserv1.
It is hoped that eventually there will be a mail server for the same
range of software to those who have e-mail access but no ftp access,
but a userid for this mail service has not been announced yet. In
the meantime, BITNET users who do not have ftp may
find the service "BITFTP at PUCC" helpfull. For example
this mail message (with no leading blanks)
To: bitftp@pucc.bitnet
FTP watserv1.waterloo.edu UUENCODE
USER anonymous
CD languages/apl
BINARY
GET index
QUIT
was successful in acquiring the index. Similar messages could result
in receiving the various pieces of software.
Once you have the index, you may see the name of some other file you
want. For such a file, determine the directory path (``dp'') and
the file name (``fn''). One example you will have already done:
the file "languages/apl/index" splits up as:
dp languages/apl
fn index
As another example, if you want the file "languages/apl/j/pc/j_pc_32.arc",
you would use the directory path and the file name:
dp languages/apl/j/pc
fn j_pc_32.arc
Prepare a little file to be a mail message to pucc:
(As before, no lines of the file have no leading blanks.)
To: bitftp@pucc.bitnet
FTP watserv1.waterloo.edu UUENCODE
USER anonymous
CD dp
BINARY
GET fn
QUIT
Of course, in the above, you replace "dp" by the appropriate directory
path, and you replace "fn" by the file name. Use your local e-mail to
send the file off. If all goes as intended, when PUCC gets your mail
message, it does the "ftp" session for you, using the commands you have
supplied. It wraps the file up in a "uuencode" package, and mails it
to you. When you get the file, you may have to combine several files
together, remove superflous blank and mail header lines, and uudecode
the file.

Subject: Unix Windows Explanations
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
It has been brought to my attention that a more thourough explanation
of the previous post on Unix Windows should be given. This week I decided
to give UW a shot, and when I booted it up and read what docs there were, it
seemed that this could be a VERY handy little program. Allowing my to connect
to a couple of different Unix boxes, and even a 3090 mainframe all at one
over a 2400 baud modem without much reduction in speed. (Quick screen updates
and the like).
I compile UW on the unix side without a hitch or any modifications (which
I must say shocked me :) and then switched emulation mode to adm31 on the
unix side. UW ran fine as long as I stayed on unix machines. When I tried
to go to a ibm 3090 vm system from the unix box via tn3270 , I encountered
problems. In the map3270 file it lists a adm31 entry with pf key control
codes, however the keybad does not send these codes out (at least I could
not get them to). I then started putting these pf and other control code
keys into the definable function keys on the st side of uw, and then tn3270
worked fine. However I would much prefer to have the keypad react in a pfkey
style, and which is why I was wondering about vt100 in uw. But since vt100
seems to be impossible to get in UW, I am now looking for a way to get the
keypad into a non-numeric mode. Is this possible? Has anyone taken a look
at the source to this program? Does it appear difficult to add a vt100
mode to the terminal?
hope this clears up some of the questions about my questions :)

Subject: what Atari DOES have
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
I have an ST and a TT. Both of these can use something the Mac, the PC and
the Amiga cannot - the Atari SLM605 laser. For DTP, nothing can rival the
speed of output and the number of applications that make use of that speed
like Atari DTP packages.
